Originally, the Pokemon franchise had 150 or 151 Pokemon to be precise. Years ago many fans were outraged by the announcement that Pokemon was going to add a new 150 Pokemon to its roster. There was supposed to only be 151 Pokemon in the Pokemon world and suddenly out of nowhere there was a whole new region with new Pokemon (at the time it seemed pretty far fetched and hard to believe for many fans). So, that’s why for some Pokemon fans there are only 151 Pokemon to them and they don’t count or like the rest of the Pokemon that were added later on. But, do keep in mind that in Pokemon Episode 1 Hu-oh was seen by Ash, however nothing like that actually happened in the video game which came out first (in Japan).

So, why exactly are there more than 150 Pokemon, well…it’s tricky. While Pokemon does need more Pokemon to survive and remain relevant it literally makes the task of Ash catching all the Pokemon an almost impossible feat. A major factor why Pokemon needed more Pokemon is simply because of profit, if Pokemon doesn’t make a profit it can’t continue to stay in business. It’s not like Pokemon could keep marketing the old games over and over again with better graphics (they actually are, but you get the point), no, it had to add more Pokemon in order to stay relevant. Of course the Pokemon Company doesn’t just care about making money, they may have carefully considered the fact that some fans might have actually wanted there to be more Pokemon.

Adding more Pokemon needed to be done. However, it is a bit depressing knowing that Ash will never “catch ’em all,” or become a Pokemon master. To elaborate, the reason why Ash will never catch all the Pokemon is not because there are too many of them, but because for every new region he tends to only catch a handful of Pokemon. Also Ash has kind of made it a point to not catch any legendary Pokemon. It’s great that the Pokemon franchise is here to stay for a very long time; at the same time it would have been great for the animated series to have more of a point, like it did at the beginning.
