The inclusion of prostitutes in the new Jack the Ripper Expansion was bound to happen. The expansion takes place 20 years after Syndicate in Victoria England in Whitechapel, the area where Jack the Ripper famously killed prostitutes and women in general. So far Syndicate seemed to be avoiding the topic of prostitutes as they omitted many sex workers known as “courtesans,” in previous games, until it was revealed that the expansion would be focusing mainly on prostitutes and their struggles with the serial killer. The expansion also touched more on the issue of prostitution itself.
However, the expansion made almost no attempt to explain why prostitution was wrong…other than saying the argument that it was wrong because it is bad. Gamers didn’t get a really hard look at the problem itself, or see any real development of characters who were trapped within it. It felt as if it was simply used as a plot device for people to have more things to do; having another thing for them to chase down on the minimap . Rather than recognize the complexity, value and difficulty of this issue. At the same time the creators of the game aren’t advocates for social justice issues. They’re game creators, they create content that they think fans will like…at the same time they push themselves to include hard topics that they may not be familiar with. And for that all we can do is applaud them for their attempt to reach us, the fans.
